The Science Behind SunSibility’s UV Protection
At SunSibility, we’re proud of the science that goes into creating our garments. All of our fabrics undergo rigorous testing in a UV laboratory, adhering to the Australian/New Zealand standard AS/NZS 4399:1996. This testing determines how well a fabric blocks ultraviolet radiation (UVR), with ratings ranging from 15 to 50+.
What makes SunSibility’s fabric stand out?
- Composition: Our fabric is composed of 80% polyamide and 20% elastane, providing strength, stretch, and durability.
- Weave Tightness: The major player in our fabric is that it is tightly woven, which is fundamentally what makes the UV protection so strong.
- Color: Darker colours tend to offer better UV protection, but even our lightest shades, like white, surpass the UPF 50+ rating.
- Stretch: Our garments are made with stretch fabrics that ensure comfort without compromising on UV protection. However we cut them in a specific way to ensure designs are flattering loose and totally wearable.
When exposed to UV radiation, SunSibility fabrics block out 97.5% of UV rays, with the highest protection rating of UPF 50+. For context, this means 10 minutes of sun exposure with UPF 50 fabric provides up to 500 minutes of protection (approximately 8 hours).
